International Labour Organisation's Conference 2016

Elize van der Westhuizen, Senior Manager Labour Relations

The annual conference of the International Labour Organisation was held from 30 May 2016 to 10 June 2016. This year, the South African Minister of Labour, Ms Mildred Oliphant was chosen as the President of the Conference and chaired the conference.

The items placed on the agenda for the conference were:
• Decent work in global supply chains;
• Decent work for peace, security and disaster resilience;
• Evaluation of the impact of the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization; and
• Maritime matters.

The Conference establishes committees to deal with the technical items on its agenda (as listed above). These committees met concurrently, worked throughout the Conference, and finalized the respective reports, which were then presented to the plenary for adoption.

The standing committee on Application of Standards were tasked to evaluate compliance in terms of standards developed by the ILO. Once again this year Zimbabwe and Swaziland were under the spotlight for, amongst others human right violations.
